Frequently asked questions

How much can I insure my car for?

Comprehensive Car Insurance offers either agreed value or market value cover.

  • "Agreed value" is the specified amount Allianz agrees to insure your vehicle up to, as shown in your policy schedule.
  • "Market value" is the cost to replace your vehicle with a vehicle of the same make, model, age and condition as your vehicle immediately prior to the loss or damage. It excludes costs and charges for vehicle registration, compulsory third-party insurance, stamp duty transfer, dealer warranty costs, transfer fees and dealer delivery.

To determine the market value, Allianz may refer to an accepted motor vehicle valuation guide used by the motor industry. In addition, to determine the market value, Allianz will look at things such as:

  • local market prices,
  • your vehicle’s condition, and
  • modifications, options or accessories that are attached to your vehicle and shown on the policy schedule.

How can I reduce my car insurance premiums?

Opting to increase your basic excess may reduce your premium for Comprehensive Car Insurance. The basic excess is the amount you need to pay as a contribution to each claim.

You may also be able to save on your premium when you select the Named driver option and list all your drivers under a Comprehensive Car Insurance policy.5

What is an excess, and when do I need to pay it?

An excess is the amount you may need to contribute towards a claim. It can be payable whenever you are the at fault driver or if the at fault driver’s details are incorrect, unavailable or you’re unable to get them at the time of the incident. The amount of the excess can vary depending on factors such as the age of the driver or whether the driver is listed on your policy. More than one excess may apply. You may choose to add the option to remove the excess for windscreen claims for an additional fee.

Can I choose my own repairer?

Allianz can assist you in selecting a suitable repairer to fix the damage to your vehicle; however, you can also choose your own repairer.4

In both instances Allianz will work closely with you and the repairer to strive to achieve the best repair outcome. However, if you choose your own repairer, Allianz may request a second quotation from a repairer chosen by them.

Allianz guarantees materials and workmanship on the repairs Allianz authorises as long as you own or lease your vehicle. This guarantee is not transferable.

Will I get a rental car?

If you have Comprehensive Car Insurance and Allianz accepts your claim, they will provide you with a rental car if your car is stolen.

For an additional premium, you can add a benefit to your Comprehensive cover to provide you with a rental car if your car is damaged in an accident.6

A rental car will be provided for up to 30 days at up to $100 a day and this may be extended if Allianz causes or contributes to the delay in repairing your car.

Always check with Allianz before arranging your own rental car as they may not cover a car you arrange.

Are personal items in my car covered?

Comprehensive Car Insurance pays up to $1,000 per claim towards the repair or replacement of personal items belonging to you, your spouse, your de facto and dependent children which are:

  • damaged in a collision involving your vehicle,
  • stolen from your vehicle which was locked, or
  • stolen at the same time as your vehicle.

Things you should know

*Save up to 10% on Comprehensive Motor Insurance on your first year’s premium (excluding taxes and government charges) when you quote and buy a new policy online. This discount is not applied on renewal. Any discounts/entitlements may be subject to rounding and only apply to the extent any minimum premium is not reached. If you are eligible for more than one, each of them is applied in a predetermined order to the premium (excluding taxes and government charges) as reduced by any prior applied discounts/entitlements. Discounts may not be applied to the premium for optional covers.

1Pay by instalment at no additional cost compared with paying annually. Instalments may be subject to minor adjustments due to rounding. Note: Your financial institution may apply transaction fees to instalment payments.

2Policyholders need to ensure their personal details on their policy match with their Westpac accounts. Only primary policyholders can see policies alongside their other Westpac accounts.

3Driver exclusions apply if the driver is unlicensed, is not following the conditions of their license, refuses a drug or alcohol test, is under the influence of drugs or exceeds the legally allowed alcohol limit. Refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) (PDF 375KB) for full driver, usage and other policy exclusions as set out in the "What's not covered" section. An additional excess applies to drivers under 25.

4If you choose your own repairer, Allianz may need a second quote from another repairer chosen by them to make sure the quote you've received is reasonable. Allianz may then authorise repairs, pay you reasonable repair costs or the car’s agreed value or replace your new car where policy conditions are met.

5If you choose to reduce your premium by naming drivers on your policy, an unnamed driver will incur a $2,500 excess (this replaces the basic and all other excesses where applicable). Minimum premiums may apply.

6Allianz will arrange a rental car of a similar size and type to your car after a covered collision. You'll get the rental car for a maximum of 30 days while Allianz either fixes your car, pays you the cost of repairs, or determines if your car is a total loss. If a rental car of a similar size and type (e.g. medium SUV) to your car is not available, Allianz will pay you a travel allowance of $50 a day for as long as they would have given you a rental car. See the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) (PDF 375KB) for more details.
